About Snow Shan Green Tea
Just like lotus tea, ancient green Shan Snow tea is the personification of Vietnamese tea culture. This tea creates a unique impression for its excellent flavour. Beside this, it has a special significance in Vietnamese tradition.
Grow so high
Snow Shan customarily grows in the northern and central parts of Vietnam. It can be found in several provinces, such as Hi Giang or Yen Bai. Although Snow Shan can grow in the highlands, the average altitude of the tea-growing regions is 600+ metres above sea level.
The Snow Shan tea tree has many varieties depending on the climate of the area in which it is grown. Trees with massive trunks grow in the north-east parts of the country; nearer to the central regions, the trees are not quite as sizable.
Ancient tea
Snow Shan tea is also called ancient tea. All over the country, you can find Snow Shan trees of unbelievable age. Some of them may be a hundred – or even three hundred – years old! This provides a wonderful opportunity to taste the same tea that our ancestors enjoyed.
These ancient trees are carefully preserved by one Vietnamese generation after another.
Taste
Snow Shan tea is white in colour, with a pleasing, soft appearance. Regardless of its strength, the tea has a sweet taste of honey and flowers.
The most outstanding flavour comes from Snow Shan White Tea Buds, which grow mostly on the high mountain slopes of Mt. Chiêu Lầu Thi in the rural district of Hoàng Su Phì. Rather than plucked leaves, these woody small bundles are actually harvested from unopened stem buds, taken from the main trunk and branches of the ancient tea trees. When infused, they release a light and delicate aroma in a pale golden liquor, with sweet floral and woody flavours that leave a lingering aftertaste of subtle spice.
