An incredible Kopi Luwak

If you are interested in world coffee culture, you may know about a unique type of coffee called kopi luwak, or chon in Vietnamese. It is exported from Vietnam in large quantities. The Vietnamese are really proud of kopi luwak because of its fame among coffee lovers around the world.

Chon is really expensive, with prices today starting from $200 per kilogram. The cost is not surprising, since chon has a taste that is a great combination of caramel and chocolate and an aroma with vanilla notes.

So what’s the secret of kopi luwak coffee?

A cute little creature

What makes chon coffee unique is that this elite drink was created by a little animal. It is hard to admit, but the truth is the truth. Not a single person was involved in the process. 

So let me introduce to you a wonderful creature called the Asian palm civet. These animals eat coffee berries from plantations, which is key to the incredible technology behind the “production” of kopi luwak. A civet’s stomach digests only the coffee berry pulp so that the beans stay intact as they pass through the digestive tract. People subsequently collect the coffee beans and wash and dry them carefully.

This organic process makes this type of coffee very interesting and tasty.

What about an old Asian legend?

There is a nice legend about the discovery of kopi luwak. It tells about a family of coffee farmers with a small plantation. After a fertile harvest, there was a big disaster. Wild civets attacked the plantation and ate all the coffee berries. The family was at risk of poverty because they had nothing to sell.

One member of the family walked through the ransacked plantation and found many coffee beans in perfect condition. So the family decided to sell them to avoid hunger.
